missing icons after security patch

Posted: 07-11-2003, 07:14 AM
This problem has boggled me for a while, and now I've at
least narrowed it down.

Upon installing WinXP security updates 817606 and 823559
via Windows Update, I've found the VOLUME icon and POWER
(battery) icon have dissapeared from my system tray.

(Neither are hidden, and both remain correctly "switched
on" via their appropriate control panel.)

If I system restore back just enough to where these
updates are removed, my icons happily appear back where
they belong.

I haven't narrowed it down between which update it is.

Is there a fix for this? Is there any way I can let
Microsoft know?

Thanks much!

I have the same problem. No fix except the 'restore' like
you. I send a 'comment' to Microsoft today describing the
problem. Hope it gets through to them and they respond. I
ran the updates twice with same resulting problem. Guess
we just can't use the updates 'till they fix whichever one
is causing it.

How'd you comment to Microsoft? I'd love to know how to
send them an appropriate support e-mail without them
charging me money for it...

Thanks to your posts, we're investigating this issue. We could use some help
narrowing down the scope of the problem.

1. Has anybody identified which update is causing this, or does the issue
only happen after installing both 817606 & 823559?
2. Does this only happen on Windows XP? Any service packs installed? You
can run winver to find out what service pack level you're at.

Please reply to the microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup.

Summary of problem reported in original post for those who missed it:

1) Install 817606 and 823559 on Windows XP.
2) Volume and Power icons disappear from system tray.
3) Restoring to point before 817606 and 823559 were installed restores
icons.
