Missing pictures copied to CD

I have copied to a cd pictures that I had in "my pictures" and when I played
the cd, they were there. At a later date I copied more pictures from "my
pictures" and they were added but I noticed some of the previous pictures
where gone. What happened to them? Are they hidden on the cd? If so, how
can I get them back? I am useing a cd-r with a 650mb capacity, and it is
only about a quarter of the way filled.
