missing "remember password" check box

I just upgraded to XP, and whenever I try to log into a network drive the computer asks me for a password. If I enter the password it works, but the expected "remember password" box is not present. Every time I reboot I have to re-enter the password. I have tried deleting the password entries from the registry. I do have a password to log in. On a possibly related note, IE also refuses to remember passwords. I have the appropriate boxes checked under Content\Autocomplete, but nothing happens when I type in a password. I have searched this newsgroup for similar problems, and have tried any solution that sounds relevant, but nothing has changed so far. I have also tried creating a non-administrator user, but the results are the same.
