Missing shortcuts

Posted: 09-16-2003, 06:04 AM
Wondering if anyone else has experienced the following:
Regardless of what method I use to create shortcuts to
folders in my Start menu, when I open the new folder
shortcut, it is missing some of the contents of the
original folder it's supposed to lead to.

For instance, if I right click Accessories, drag it to
Quicklaunch, and select "Create Shortcut Here," the
shortcut is created; but it opens to an Accessories folder
missing half the accesssories.

Same thing if I try to create shortcuts from Start's
Programs folder to the desktop; same thing if I Drag and
Drop instead of right clicking.

Please post if you have a solution / fix; or even if you
don't have a solution, but have experienced similar
problems.

Thanks---Eric

The folders you see from the cascading start menu are a composite of the contents of the

'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories'
and
'C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories'

Same with Programs folder. If you check the properties of the shortcut you've created, it will be
pointing to one or the other. You could copy the contents of both folders to a another folder and
reference that from your shortcut.

Interesting suggestion, but even when I "Open All Users"
I'm still missing shortcuts. Can find no pattern in what
shows up and what does not. Everything shows up when I
oopen Start/Programs/Accessories (from start menu); but no
other manner of access shows all. A real stumper.--Thanks
for trying tho!---Eric

Sure, I'll take a stab at it. Right-click the start button and go into
explore. Look into the various Accessories files in documents and
settings, find the one which has the shortcuts you want (add anything
that seems to be missing). Then create a new shortcut on the desktop
by browsing to this particular Accessories folder, drag to the quick
launch area.

You can always put more shortcuts in the folder once it's in the quick
launch area.

Are you sure the shortcuts that are "missing" from All Users aren't in the accessories folder under
your name?

If you open:
'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories'
and also open:
'C:\Documents and Settings\Eric\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories'

You should be able to find any shortcut that appears under 'Start->All Programs->Accessories' in one
or the other. 'All Users' isn't a collection of each individuals shortcuts, it's those shortcuts
accessible to all users IN ADDITION TO whatever is in their own profile.
