MM2 crashing

Posted: 10-20-2003, 03:37 AM
I upgraded to Movie Maker 2 and now it freezes
constantly. Is there a patch I can download? I don't
think that it is my computer. Athalon 2600, 512mb ram,
128mb video card.
Thanks for any help.

99% of the crashes on import are due to bad codecs. What type of files are
you trying to import ?

A problem many users of MM2 have is random crashing of the application. I also had the problem and solved it by setting the Direct X Override to "Default" from "Override Value". To try this yourself, go to: Start>Programs>Accessories>System Information. In System Information, click on Tools, select "Direct X Diagnostic Tool". Select the "More Help" tab and click on the Override box. This will bring you to a dialog box in which you can select "Default" if not already selected. In my system, the Override Value was selected and a value of 60 was in the box. I don't know what this does to Direct X but setting it to Default cured MM2 crashes and everything else works okay, too. Maybe some applications or downloads changed this value because I sure didn't!. I finally finished a video of Christmas 2003 complete with music, titles, credits and a slide show at the end. Burned to two DVD's and family loved it. The grandkids got a kick from seeing themselves on television.

Interesting... I checked 2 of my computers. It's a corner that I've never
been in, and the setting on each was 'Default'.

I can't take all the credit for mucking around in Direct X. My oldest son is an XP expert and he thought of it even though he doesn't do video or know the applications. He's a real smart guy and I am thankful he is around to help

MM2 crashing
Posted: 01-26-2005, 01:05 AM
Hi,
I have tried the recommended fixes. MM2 and Media player both lock up PC -
lockup = black screen, and HD light continual glow, have to manually reboot.

Either MM2 or Media Player will work fine for a file of about 2 min 30 sec
in length.
I have done a complet re-install of XP home. Followed the updates from MS,
eventually getting to SP2. DId the codex, DX, vid driver routine. Same
results.

The puzzling thing is this. It used to work fine before or about Dec 15
2004. I had taken ( as I have done to prob a 100 files before ) a .wav file
about 30 mins in length, import into MM2, then save it as a wmv file, when it
went to save the file screen goes black, HD light glows, manual shutdown to
reboot. I can't help but think this is a MS issue ????

If I go to event manager, there is nothing there for an error. At least not
as far as I can tell. PLease Help MS. It used to work great, then between
files it stops working.

ok, one more item, relevant ? I dont know. If I used notepad to cut and past
from one doc to another, after x amount of time, pc will lock up as stated
above. Only MM2, Media Player and notepad cause this lock up.

Hope I gave enough information to go.

Pappa have a 38 GB HD with 32 GB free. I can play audio cd's such as you buy,
all day long, I did it last night, for about 45 mins, went from one track to
another, try a wmv or wma files, down she goes, try to copy a cd to wma, down
she goes. ihave my paged mem set to 512 - 1024. I have even moved the
acceleration slider to disable direct x, still locks up.

If I go to safe mode, I can play wmv files, just no audio comes out.
Wondered about my onboard audio, in bios it says AC97 Audio, in system
manager it says Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,1373)(WDM). Could there be a
directx conflict there ? Givin ya all the info I can find that might help.
