modem help pls

i just installed xp professional and on my previous system
(me) my modem used com 4 but now you can only select 1 or
2 and neither register the hardware, how do i get come 4
to appear in the selecction?

on pinter port selection a whole list of ports are
displayed including four and i tried removing it to see if
it would then appear in the modem options but it said if i
removed it itt would be remove from the system so i didn't.

please help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Does the modem work?.. can you connect to the internet?..

no the modem won't dial, (no dial tone) i simply get the
error 692 there was a hardware faliure in the modem(or
other modem connecting device)

Go to the modem manufacturer website and get XP drivers for it..
