I don't have a machine with a modem handy, but in the modems properties page
somewhere there should be a field called something like "Initialization
Strings" with an edit box under it. Put M0 (M Zero) in the box. That should
tell the modenm to set its speaker volume to off. If I remember right valid
numbers are from 0 to 4.
