The dial sound comes from the modem itself.
First, if your computer case is of a good make, it may be
killing the sounds from the little speaker installed on
your modem card.
If that is NOT the case, try your Modem Properties.
The Modem tab should have a volume slider on it.
Mine does :-))
This could also be a result of your modem's driver.
Further, on the Advanced tab, in the Additional
Initialization Commands (or whatever it says there) string
box, try to add the following:
ATL3
this should invoke high modem-speaker volume.
Good Luck

I have a lucent modem. When I initiate a dial-up
connection I can hear the faint sound from the modem
card, however, I do not hear the modem sound through my
computer speakers. I have them modem sound (modem
properties) volume turned up high, but this does not
resolve the problem. Any ideas?

You can try this...
Control Panel|PHONE & MODEMS|MODEMS tab|PROPERTIES|ADVANCED tab

In the Extra Settings box, type L2M1

Click on OK to exit the dialog.

Most modems have their own speaker, so you wouldn't hear the sound from the
computer speakers.
