Mouse incompatibility

I can't get my mouse to work properly.

I just got XP, and I have an old Mouse Systems
SmartScroll mouse I love, but the driver doesn't accept
anything other than Windows 98.

It automatically picks a generic PS/2 mouse that shows an
option to look for the wheel or assume it has one, but
when I open the mouse control panel it doesn't have a
wheel tab and my wheel doesn't work.

Anyone know what I can do to make it work? I have tried
reinstalling, and I can't make it choose another generic
driver like I used to be able to do in 98.
