Mouse troubles

I have a IBM optical USB mouse with adapter for using the mouse port. I
switched to USB to see how it works, but every so often the pointer freezes
for a bit, sometimes it stays frozen unless I disconnect and reconnect the
mouse cable. I tried reconnecting to the mouse port but that doesn't work,
the pointer only moves now when using the USB post. I also obtained an
updated driver, no change to the problem. Is there a way to get the mouse
port working again?

Eric,

When you connected the mouse to the PS/2 port (mouse port), did you do this
while the computer was shut down? If not, try that approach. Unlike the USB
port, the mouse port is not hot swappable.

I have a Compaq laptop with Vista. For some reason the mouse makes
selections without me clicking. Often it is not what I want; it is something
I simply passed over.
I can not figure out how to correct the problem.

If you are using a 3rd party rodent look for updated mouse
drivers and utilities. Also check by closing all you can in
Task Manager to see if you have something running that
interferes with the rodent.

Startup Programs - Enable / Disable - Windows Defender - MSCONFIG

3rd party is a mouse which uses its own drivers.... sounds like yours
is. Check System Maker's Site for updated drivers ...... and possibly
BIOS.

Called a Touchpad. NOW go to your system maker's site and
update your drivers!
