Moving from NT 4.0 to XP

Posted: 07-05-2003, 03:37 PM
My laptop (Dell Latitude) is currently configured with
WinNT Server 4.0 SP6. I am thinking about moving to XP.

Is this a straight-forward process that can be done by an
individual (with reasonable technical skills) or should I
get a professional to perform this conversion?

Any suggestions or tips/articles I could review before
going forward?

Greetings --

Since it is not technically possible to perform an in-place
upgrade/downgrade from a server OS to a workstation OS, you'll need to
format the hard drive and start from scratch.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) You should, before
proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that there are WinXP device
drivers available for all of the machine's components. There may not
be, if the PC was specifically designed for WinNT.

Additionally, run Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you
have any incompatible hardware components or applications.

When ready, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You may
need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot
from the CD; consult the PC or motherboard's manual for specifics.
