Moving XP to new hard drive - boot issues?

Posted: 01-27-2009, 03:37 AM
I have a laptop computer with only one internal drive bay, with XPhome-sp3.
The disk is full and I need to move to a new disk. I do not have access to
other computers, but I do have an external USB drive. I also have a BartPE
disk that is current. Oh yeah, and I cannot boot off the USB drive.
OK, I can clone the partitions from the old hard disk onto the USB with the
Gparted live CD.
How do I proceed from there?
I do need to make the disk bootable; I can install grub for that, if
necessary.
Question is, is all this going to work, or is XP just going to fail to boot?

The last time I did this I simply used Acronis TI to clone to the usb
connected new drive, expanding the clone to the use all the new hd,
Immediately on completion, shutdown, swapped the hd's and booted
(the old hd contained two partitions)

To make the new disk bootable, use disk management to create a primary
partition, mark it active, and format it. This will place the Windows
XP boot code in the boot sector of the active primary partition,
making the disk bootable. Then you can use gparted to copy the
operating system.

I knew there was a trick to it.
Thanks.
