mp3 Playback Issue

Posted: 03-22-2005, 01:49 AM
I couldn't find any earlier postings of this problem, so here goes.

Occasionally I'll download an mp3 (from a peer to peer network) that
seems to download okay, but when I play it (e.g.,in WMP10), it gets to a
point and then just jumps back to the beginning and starts over. It
does this several times. Here's the weird thing: if I download another
version of the same cut, one with a different compression (different
file size), it does the same thing, at the same place! When I open the
file in Nero Wave Editor, it shows the same thing - the first section of
the song is repeated several times - so I don't think this is just a
WMP10 problem. Curiously, I've only found two songs that this happens
for, but no matter how many different versions of the mp3 files I
download for these particular songs, the problem is always the same.

Am I going nuts, or has anyone seen this before?

There are tons of files out there just like that one. The RIAA and its
minions flood the p2p networks with these fake files. You're most likely
to encounter them when trying to download very new music; a month or so
after a CD is released the genuine files begin to outnumber the fakes.

Hmmm. Actually both of the cuts I've had trouble with are *old* - from
the 60's.

That is a bit unusual, unless those tracks perhaps appeared on a
recently-released soundtrack or greatest hits CD. But you're right- it's
not a WMP problem, as Nero has demonstrated. Perhaps the RIAA is even
screwing around with older material these days. Out of curiosity, what is
the song title?

Regards,
Ian.

I'm a fan of old 60's folk music; the two tracks that are giving me
trouble are Paul Simon's instrumental guitar solo "Anji", and Jackson
Browne's song "These Days" performed by Tom Rush.

What gets me is that I downloaded more than one version of each -
different size files, and they still looped back at exactly the same
place. Really weird. It sort of seems to me more like there's an error
decoding the mp3 than something bad in the files. Though I can't
imagine what would be causing it. Is decoding mp3 strictly a function
of the realizer software (Nero or MWP), or might audio drivers be
involved, i.e., could my Creative Audigy hardware, drivers, or related
software be the culprit?

BTW, thanks for responding.

The fact that it's just these two particular songs giving you a problem,
and the fact that Nero shows that the files have repeated segments in
them, indicates that the problem is entirely within the files themselves
and not within your system. And the fact that the p2p networks are full
of just this sort of file seals the deal. You know, there are "other" and
more reliable avenues for downloading music files:
http://www.slyck.com/ng.php You can search or browse a number of music
binaries groups here: http://www.audiofind.com/ I'll see if I can find
the tunes in question when I'm back online later today.

Regards,
Ian.
