I have no idea what Microsoft, Real, Apple, or Flash may do in the
future. I do know we are in the middle of a media format war, many
think there is money to be made in downloads, and all are fighting for
their formats. Thus it is no surprise that the Windows encoder converts
to wmv and wma but not Real media files, and the Real encoder converts
to Real files, but not Windows files. If you work with various media
formats, you can get a few things for free from Microsoft, Real, etc.,
and there are a few free programs. However you likely will have to buy
some programs to encode into some formats from other formats. And some
of the newer formats require a software provider to pay their owner if
they are used in their programs.

You can provide multi formats and multi bit rates, but the format wars
do not make this easy. I have a few examples on my site at the URLs:

http://www.cwdjr.info/temp/video_multiFormat2.php

http://www.cwdjr.info/temp/video_multiBR3.php

http://www.cwdjr.info/broadbandMedia.../cancanMP4.php

The last example is a MP4, and it is set up to play on a recent Real
player. To be able to see all of the videos here, you will need recent
versions of the WMP, Real player, QT player, and Flash installed. Some
examples require a good broadband connection of over 2Mbps to stream
well without a long delay for buffering. The quality of the videos in
the various formats can not be well compared, because different bit
rates and qualities of format converters were used for the various
video files.

I find that the QT player and Nero Showtime will play my mp4 movie
example as well as Real. You need to open the player and input the
actual url rather than a playlist url into it. In Showtime you input
the url into the open file box. The actual media url for my example is
http://www.cwdjr.info/movie/cancan.mp4 . For someone that happens to
have a fairly recent set of Nero programs on their computer and does
not have Real or QT players, Nero's Showtime might be very useful for
playing mp4 movies.

I think you have missed the picture here (no pun intended).

I have seen in a PapaJohn post about windows movie maker having support for
MP4/Mpeg4. "Please read carefully">>

http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Pa...-4_Movies.aspx

I was wondering if the new verson supports it also OR has it been taken out
of Windows movie Maker all together?

If it's still here in 2.1, where is it?
If it's not, where can I download an old version of Windows Movie maker that
has it?

As I said in my first post "Quote" > My question is:
Since Windows Movie Maker OR Windows Media Encoder will not import
mp4/mpeg4, Microsoft has left many of us with no alternitive but to move to
other encoding and movie makeing software.

Will Microsoft include conversion of this "Main Stream" format in the future
to these 2 programs?

I have no problems "Playing or recording" MP4/Mpeg4/3gp/Divx/xvid....etc.
they are all basicly MP4. Windows media player will play them all

I think a Microsoft person would be better qualified to answer these
questions.
BUT, If anyone else knows these answers I would be greatfull for their input!

Windows Media Player requires an added plugin to play MP4 apparently. I
had plugins for .ape, .flac, and several other formats on the WMP10,
but they are now gone on the 11. I do not like to direct files on a web
page to a player that requires a plugin added by the computer owner, as
there are still many people who consider a computer just as another
appliance and expect it to work properly for what they want to do out
of the box. The WMP does not come supporting very many files. However
the Real player will support Real files, Microsoft media files, and
several other files such as mp4, to say nothing of SMIL media files. I
find it a far superior player to the WMP in nearly every way. Since
many who are really interested in media want to play most common media
files out there, they usually will install the Real player, and perhaps
the Winamp and QT players as well as flash. The main reason that the WMP
seems to be so common is that it comes installed on many computers, but
then many of the major computer companies are now beginning to deliver
their new computers with several media players installed.
