I have been able to install office2000 or 2003 on Vista without problem. If
your version is older then that you may have to run the install program in
compatibility mode.

Also note that older versions of Outlook will have password problems when
installed on Vista. I believe 2003 is okay, but I am relatively sure your
passwords will not be saved on 2000. If you don't use Outlook, the rest of
Office 2000, XP and 2003 have been reported to install okay. As mentioned
earlier, try compatibility wizard to install it.

Also check if there's a trial version of the latest Vista Office version
(7?). That can be a problem-causer.
