Default msn messenger 6.1 installing/ logging in problems

I have tried to get msn messenger 6.1 working on my PC
for sometime now. I have windows XP as OS. My problem is
that i downloaded messenger 6.1 and installed it all
correctly but every time I open it, it reinstalls itself,
then after that when i try to sign in or log in it either
does not give me enough time to sign in, before closing,
or it lets me sign in only to be signed in for a couple
seconds before closing. I try it over and over only for
the same result. Someone please help me this is driving
me nuts.

Thank You,

Kevin Snea

I was also have this same problem. I fixed it by removing
the MSN Messenger
folder from:
C:\Documents and
Settings\<userNameGoesHere>\Application Data\Microsoft

Once the folder was removed, Messenger created a new one
once I successfully
logged back in.

I'm experiencing a similar problem. Messenger does not reinstall
itself, but it appears to login, logout, login, ..."forver"

Greetings Kevin,

As a quick solution (note that this will remove your custom emoticons, display pictures,
etc.), close MSN Messenger (right-click its icon in the system tray/notification area, by the
clock and choose Exit).

Then click Start, then Run, type:
%userprofile%\application data\microsoft
and click OK.
Then right-click the MSN Messenger folder, choose Delete, and then confirm the operation.

After you've removed the MSN Messenger folder, simply restart MSN Messenger by going to the
Start button, (All) Programs, and MSN Messenger 6.1. Then try signing in again.

What is the status of this MAJOR problem? I'm getting swamped with customers
who are having this problem. I cannot login myself, at all. My customers are
all e-mailing me with the same problem:

"I login to MSN, then it logs me out. It keeps doing this forever. What
should I do?"

I'm afraid to tell so many users to to fix it using such an ad-hoc approach.
Where can I find the offical fix?

-Chris

Hi Chris,

There is no "official fix", in fact I avoided even recommending this for a few days myself.
As a secondary fix, you can simply tell users to downgrade to MSN Messenger 6.0:
