Multiplayer LAN Games between Vista & XP

Posted: 09-21-2006, 02:00 AM
Has anybody been able to successfully play multiplayer lan games between an
xp box and a vista box?

I have tried it with Age of Empires II and Total Annihilation. Both games
play fine on single player but I can not launch a multiplayer game.

The two machines are networked through my router and are sharing an internet
connection and a printer. They can see each others shares no problem. I can
access files on either computer in either direction using file explorer.

But when I create a multiplayer game on either machine and try to connect to
it from the other machine I can not connect. I can see the game on the other
machine and the game tries to connect but eventually times out. The symptoms
are the same whether I create a game on the vista machine or on the xp
machine.

Has anybody else had this problem? Or rather, I should say has anybody been
able to successfully game over their lan with a vista machine and an xp
machine?

Is the Windows Firewall (or any other firewall) blocking them?

Yep, I just installed Total Annihilation today on my Vista machine and
it is networked through an older Netgear hub to my Win XP (Home version)
machine. TA works great (my son beat me in our first game!) My 1st
suggestion would be to disable firewalls on both machines. Then check
to see if your IP is setup with TCP/IP ver 4 on the Vista machine. I
also got Call of Duty 1 working in multiplayer mode with only some
issues with a few maps (not sure why -- it''s either Vista or my new
graphics card doesn't like them). Next I'll be checking Civilization:
Call to Power, Grand Theft Auto 2, and Battlefield.

I have successfully played Age of Empires III arty

but it was a loong way to get there (it took me 4 hours due t
3 STUPID problems

I have Vista Business x32 on my notebook and xp Professional on my P

and my problem was

if you set up a LAN network through a router or HUB or however, yo
must check if the connection works from both computers and you must b
able to share files !!
(try to share a folder and access it on the other computer). In my cas
this worked fine from my PC with xp accessing my files on the noteboo
with vista, but I was not able to access my shared PC folders from m
notebook.:

The problem was (after the firewall and everything...) in :mad
REGISTRY of xp windows

So I advice you (to spare time and work and nervs:cry and d
thisarty:

1->Start->Run->regedi
2->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHIN
3->SYSTE
4->CurrentControlSe
5->Contro
6->Ls
7-> and now look to the right side of the open comman
there you see a list:sick

focus o
restrictanonymou

(not restrictanonymoussam) :sick
there has to be a number, and it HAS TO BE a " 0 " as a zero :sick
in the en
if you want the connection to work properly (I had a number 1 there
but it could be a number 2

if it is anything else but a zero (or 0) click twice on thi
restrictanonymous and change it to 0
than you HAVE TO close the command and reboot (restart) computer.:cry

...

:shock
It changes with every next restart, so it could be you would have t
change it everytime you would like t
play.:sick::sick::sick::sick::sick

than you have to check the version of te game (just update it on al
computers to be the same

and you can play... I was able to!!!:cool

(in AoE3 you get IP written right after PC1 creates the gam and yo
just copy it on the other computer):geek

that would be it:cool

It took me too long and since my brother doesn't have a clue abou
computers, I am now a proud 20 year-old computer maniac girl who ha
build her own LAN network. -that is very unusual where I live..
and I just had to sing a glory to me...:cool

ok whatever:rolleyes

Have a nice timearty

Hope I helped:

Natali
