Multiplayer LAN Games between Vista and XP

Posted: 09-21-2006, 02:01 AM
Has anybody been able to successfully play multiplayer lan games between an
xp box and a vista box?

I have tried it with Age of Empires II and Total Annihilation. Both games
play fine on single player but I can not launch a multiplayer game.

The two machines are networked through my router and are sharing an internet
connection and a printer. They can see each others shares no problem. I can
access files on either computer in either direction using file explorer.

But when I create a multiplayer game on either machine and try to connect to
it from the other machine I can not connect. I can see the game on the other
machine and the game tries to connect but eventually times out. The symptoms
are the same whether I create a game on the vista machine or on the xp
machine.

Has anybody else had this problem? Or rather, I should say has anybody been
able to successfully game over their lan with a vista machine and an xp
machine?

Do they happen to have the same Authorization code? Or do you own 2
different versions of the games.
I would try, but I only own 1 version of AOE II.

It should work. I run the CS:Source dedicated server on Vista and I can
connect to it from my XP computer and even my friends can connect to it via
the internet by entering the IP addy. We play online all the time.

No problems here playing Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour on the LAN.
Vista RC1 x64 on my box, and XP Pro x86 on the other.

Hmm, maybe a firewall issue?

Thank you all for your help.

Turns out it was indeed the firewall. The strange thing is that even when I
turned off the firewall it was still blocking the games. Only when I turned
it back on and explicitly told the firewall to allow these games through did
it work.

Does Vista require a reboot for the firewall to be truly turned off? If not
then this may be a bug. Anyhow, thank you all for your help. I'm relieved
to know that it's not a Vista issue.

I've been successful with Battle for Middle-Earth 1 and 2, and Age of
Empires 3. Make sure the games are allowed to pass through the firewall.

Not an issue. Both those games are designed to work over a LAN off one CD.

The Vista to XP Lan Games connection problems Solution!!

After trying to play several different lan games with my Vista equipped
machine and not being able to join I finally found the way to make it
work!! OH JOY! SO many forums browsed in vain. Finally I found it. For
all of you, the problem was ipV6.

To fix that problem you need to disable ipv6:

1- Open the Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel on the
Vista equipped machine

2- Click on the little blue letters "View Status" next to your LAN
connection (my wireless connection for me)

3- Then click on the Properties button (not wireless properties or
anything else, just properties)

4- Click continue on the little annoying pop-up vista window if any

5- Now look for the field under "this connection uses the following
items" there with Client for Microsoft Networks/QoS Packet Scheduler
etc. You should find many of those with little checkboxes next to them.

6- Now i'm not very sure if it's only ipV6 that you need to disable, so
to make sure, do steps 1-5 with you XP equipped machine to check what
they have in that field, and keep the checkboxes checked for only those
items. Uncheck everything else. I uncheked Internet Protocol Version 6
(TCP/IPv6) , and the two Link-Layer ones.

7- Try again to join your lan game it should work fine ( it did for me
and our Dungeon Siege 2 Lan Party!)

Hail! to the Grand Superlapin that saves us all!!!!
