Multiple Hard Drive problems

hello all,

ive been using vista x64 for a few weeks now and i love it. installed
with new 160gb hd that was part of my build, then added old ide drive,
which is also 160gb. it recently filled up, so i purchased a 750gb hd.
just got it installed, went my computer > manage > disk management and
formatted. runs fine. only problem is, when my computer turns on, the
bios doesnt remember which drive is the boot drive, i have to manually
hit f12, and select the drive. what am i missing here? there are no
jumper pins on any the back of any of the drives, including my dvd
drive, which by the way is also ide. is this what the problem is? i need
to find one of those damn tiny things and put it on my master boot
drive?

thanks in advance....

If the drives are IDE, they will have jumper pins, and so will the DVD. IF it
is IDE. If they are SATA, then they don't have Master/slave pins.

If they are IDE and they are probably set to Cable select, and the drive at
the top end of the cable will be the systems first choice to boot from. This
is the configuration you want.

In any case, so long as you only have an OS installed on one drive, the
system should find the correct drive to boot from. If your BIOS specifically
asks you to choose, then you may have a bootable partition on one of the
other drives. In any case such a BIOS should give you the option to select
the boot drive.

You may just want to move the data on the 160GB "Old" drive to a folder in
the 750 and then format the old 160. This will eliminate any chance of
booting to it. Then make sure your boot drive is at the top of the cable,
set to cable select, and the BIOS is set to look at that drive, if it has
that option.

Better yet, image the boot 160 to the 750 and throw both of the the old
160's out. You can always add another 750 if you run out of space.
