I have several disk as well, for some reason I decided to delete my XP boot,
so now I only have 2 disk (with 2 partitions each) for Windows Vista and the
other for a Mandriva Linux boot.

When I deleted the XP boot, I noticed the lack of partition utilities with
both builds (5600 and 5728), and the problem reading non NTFS disks. One of
my partitions was formated in FAT32, and I was unable to see it until I
finished the installation.

Are those drives that you cannot see formatted using NTFS?

Multiple Hard Drives
Posted: 11-06-2007, 05:19 AM
I have had this 60 gig Maxtor Hard Drive laying around for some time. Decided
to put it to use. Installed it as the Slave, booted my PC, drivers were
installed.
Open My Computer, drive was showing correct size. However, I formatted the
thing, and its only allowing me to set it up as a 7.37 Gig drive.. ?

Anyone know of how I can get it back to 60?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if your other hard drive is a Maxtor or not but Maxtors don't
seem to work well with other brands of hard drives. We have a Maxtor and it
has to be in a computer by itself. I don't know if this is part of your
problem or not.

To be honest, I am not sure. I know my main hard drive is a Seagate.

Run diskmgmt.msc. Delete all partitions on the drive and create one new one
that uses the full size of the drive.

Thanks Sandra and Kerry. The Diskmgmt.msc did the trick with the partition
issue. However, there is another problem on the same drive. After 30 or so
minutes of the Pc being on. The drive "vanishes". And wont show back up.
Almost like it isnt there. Now if i restart, or simply turn off, and on the
Pc. Its back for another 30 or so minutes.

What would cause the Maxtor to "vanish"? Better yet, how do i stop it?

Thanks again.

This is why I don't use Maxtor drives, because they give too many
problems. The vanishing part could be that the drive is losing its
connection to the motherboard, which is common with early SATA
implementations and cheap components. If its an older IDE drive, then my
next statement is even more important:

My guess is that the drive will eventually pack-up completely and not
show up at all no matter what you do, so don't go storing any critical
data on it. Replace it it something else, like a Seagate.

I have some Seagate drives on my system that are pushing close to 7
years of use (I have 8 hard disks ranging from 80GB to 250GB), and
havn't had any problems with them. I do, however, have a huge pile of
Maxtor drives that I've pulled out of clients machines because of
failures, some of which are less than a year old!

I see, thanks. The computer is not even 3 years old. But, after talking with
some people I know. They all seem to say along the same thing.. "Get rid of
the Maxtor".
I dont really need the space, just have had this never used 60 gig lying
around, figured I would put it to use.

Thanks all. The Maxtor should make great target practice. =D
