My computer doesn't recognise DVD any more

I really hope someone can help me with this.
I have, in my computer, a DVD-Ram and a DVD+-RW drive.
Since (and I can't say which one was the cause of this)
installing Interactual DVDPLayer and/or updating the
firmware of the DVD+-RW drive to make it recognise certain
brands of blank DVDs neither of my drives will work
properly.
Specifically, neither drive will notice that a new disc has
been inserted. By this I mean that when I put a new disc in
and then go to "My Computer" it still shows Drives E: and
F: as containing a disc that haven't been in the drives for
a few weeks. If I then put another disc in either drive it
will still claim the same 4 week old disc is in there.
However, when I double click on the icon in My Computer,
for either drive, it will always give me an acurate display
of what's on the disc. It will also give an acurate total
space/free space reading in My Computer.
Also, and I don't know if this is linked to the previous
symptom, when I put a DVD-Video in either drive they won't
recognise it as a DVD. And hence neither Windows Media
Player, PowerDVD or RealOne Player will recognise that a
DVD-Video is in the drive, but bizzarely InterActual Player
plays them fine (hence my suspicion that it may be the
cause of the problems.)
Here is my computer's specifications:
WinXp Pro with SP1
Epox Kt133a MOBO
Athlon 1.2 Ghz TBird
786Mb SDram
140GB HardDrives (80 + 60GB Maxtor 7200rpm drives)
GeForce 4 Mx440 128DDr 8xAGP GFX Card
S4 Savage Pro 8MB GFX Card (Dual Monitors)
SB Audigy Gamer Sound Card
RealTek 100BaseT Ethernet Card
UnKnown Brand of DVD-RAM
NEC 1300a DVD+-RW
My thanks guys.....
Thanks.
I am sorry for such a long question, but InterActual
Player, being the only software I can use to watch DVDs, is
an awful program and crashes regularly, and also doesn't
pause video without starting it again from the beginning of
the movie.
So any help would be gratefully recieved.
