My experience with 5728 so far

Posted: 09-24-2006, 07:14 AM
I downloaded build 5728 last night to my surprise the Akamai download
manager worked very well however there wasn't much bandwidth.

after the download finished I burnt the Iso file to disk this also went very
well

I ran the disk from within build 5600 and chose the upgrade option I found
it to go very slow the entire process took almost 3 hours
On a special note I had accidently left my usb stick plugged in with
readyboost enabled and to my surprise this didn't effect the upgrade
installation at all. and after the upgrade installation readyboost was still
enabled.
The only other issue I had was my sound drivers(soundmax). Under build 5600
I had to reinstall them in compatibility mode for winxp in order to have
sound in media center, after the upgrade installtion I had to reinstall them
again in compatibilty mode to have sound in media center.

All my previously installed programs under build 5600 still work under build
5728 after the upgrade installation

Other than that I had no BSOD's at all and no other issues so far

It seems like MSFT may have got it right this time great job

Same here, I've added a link to a modified inf to allow Toshiba users with
Nvidia Go 7300/7600 to install the Vista driver package off the Nvidia
website ( http://kaiwai.blogspot.com)

So far, things for me has been very stable, not one crash yet, it is very
fast and snappy; infact, more teh snappy than Windows XP: personally, keep
pushing out a new build every two weeks until the shipment date, take the
feedback as valid and address the genuine system integrity issues that are
raised rather than dismissing them off hand.

Apart from that, I'm going to be a happy Vista + Office user next year

It seems the only thing so far that I've had a problem with is UAC
it's great that it's there
But I had a left over WINNT directory in Cdrive it still had all the system
files in it and vista simply would not let me delete it not even with UAC
turned off I had to go into Safe mode with UAC turned off to be able to
delete it
This could be a problem in the instance a user needs to delete a system file
for maintenance purposes.
It seems UAC has an extra level of protection with is normally spoken a good
thing but there should be an override to turn off all forms of file
protection for advanced maintenance tasks.
Other than that I'm still very happy with build 5728

My experience was not so good. I did an upgrade install over 5600 and that
part went well. I am using a Dell XPS Gen 2 with an external Dell 2405
monitor. Under 5600, I can turn off the laptop monitor and boot directly to
the external monitor after setting it up in the Display Settings. However,
under 5728, this function does not work. The system can't even distinguish
between the two monitors. Even though 5728 is faster, I don't want to have
to go over to my laptop to log in and press the hardware key to get the
external monitor working. I have gone back to 5600 until MS gets this
fixed.

I running it from a desktop
the specs are
cpu p4 3.0 Ghz prescott core
ram 2x 512mb 1Gig total
motherboard Asus P4P800s-x
hdd's 1x 40Gb ide 1x 250Gb Sata
video Nvidia 6200 256Mb Agp

It's ran very well with all builds of vista so far
But after what you just said I'll try running dual moniturs to see if this
is also an issue with my setup
