my sound sounds like its coming from a hallway

all of my sound sounds like its coming from out of a
hallway. i have no idea why, i share this computer with
my family, so i don't know what happened or what could
have happened, i have no idea why this is happening,
please email me,

Your speaker settings may be set incorrect. Go to:
Start/ControlPanel/Sounds,speech.../Sounds and Audio
Devices/Speaker settings/Advanced button. Now check that
your speakers are setup to your specifications such as
Desktop speakers, etc. Click Apply and OK. If that does
not correct the problem, set your microphone to Mute by
rightclicking the Volume Control icon and Open Volume
Control.

I have just read this and noticed the date.
I hope you got plenty of response and sorted it out.
I am now in exactly the same boat as you were and
wondered if you could pass on any advice that you found
helpful.
I would be very grateful for any tips.
