My Vista is Slow During Fast Downloads

Posted: 07-04-2008, 08:09 AM
I'm running a pretty new laptop: Vista Home Premium on a Core 2 Duo (1.83
GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 667 FSB) with 3GB RAM. When I download files at speeds of
about 100 kb/sec or above (in Firefox, uTorrent, Miro, etc), my computer goes
noticeably slower overall. There's significant delay when I move the mouse
around the screen and such. This doesn't always happen, at least not on a
fresh reboot, but it's not long before the problem comes up.

From looking at the task manager, there's no other processes sucking up the
CPU, the temperature of each core is around 50 degrees C, and almost half my
RAM is free. I haven't seen information anywhere on this specific problem,
but I've tried a number of the steps recommended to help improve Vista's
performance to no avail.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Elton

Elton,

one possible cause could be the network adapter eating up
interrupt response processor cycles. It could be defective or
poorly designed, or there could be a driver or interrupt
hardware problem.

Try to investigate in these directions.

Not a bad idea, but I don't know where to find this help. I'm using a
Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN (I think BCM43xx), which seems to be fairly common.
Does anyone know of any issues with it or fixes? Some Google browsing didn't
get me anywhere.

I'll try sending an e-mail to Broadcom to see what they say.

Any other ideas or suggestions in the meantime?

Thanks,

Elton

I don't know if it is related but I have a Broadcom based card (Linksys)
that acted up with Vista and also acts up with Ubuntu - in fact it
hangs Ubuntu pretty badly, so I wouldn't rule out the possibility it's
some hardware fault.
