Napster 2.0 is out, and it sucks!

Posted: 10-28-2003, 07:26 AM
I got an e-mail saying that it was ready for download. The interface is a lot
like PressPlay, only worse! If you click on an artist name in the damned file
tree, you may only get one or two songs listed from a particular album. If you
click on the album link, then you will see all of the songs. Some songs have
blue text, and some have black text. What's the difference? Beats the hell out
of me? I double-clicked several songs to stream a 30-second preview of them,
but often got error that it couldn't connect. Nothing comes close to Rhapsody,
IMHO. If they an get a prescription-free version out, they will own the market
even if they have to raise the price for those tracks to 99 cents.

Napster 2.0 does seem to have some serious drawbacks. The difference
between blue and black is blue indicates a "popular" song. My biggest
complaint is not with the interface but with the file format. One can
only download in WMA format -- why not MP3 or AAC? AAC would at least
play on the iPod. iTunes for Windows is a far superior product. The
interace is easy. Transportability is great. Sound quality for AAC
is great. The WMA downloads that one can save are only in 128! Why
not at least 192? When you buy a song for $0.99 and download it as
WMA, you can convert it to MP3 using MediaTwins Advance Encode Decode
software. This is based on the Media Series 9 SDK. A warning comes
up you can only do this to move it to a player (like the iPod) that
does NOT support WMA. Even then, the WMA tags do not translate to ID3
tags. The DRM for the "free" downloadable WMA files that come with
the $10 per month subscription is different! These will not transcode
from WMA into MP3, making them worthless except to listen to on my PC.
Napster 2.0 -- learn from Apple. Drop the subscription, let go of
WMA and loosen up your DRM.
