| Hello, all. I just bought a new laptop running on Vista. This is my first experience with Vista. I created only one username and it was an Administrator-level user. I also bought MS S&T 2008 (the basic version, w/o GPS) earlier this week. This was my first experience with a DVD-based S&T. My previous S&T experiences were limited to CD-based edition, i.e. 2006 and before. I have had no luck installing S&T 2008, and some helpful posters on the Microsoft S&T forum suggested that I post here and on the general Vista forum for help. Whenever I try to run setup_ST.exe, as an administrator, and after turning off my firewalls and anti-virus programs, the setup program would begin to run, and I would see something about text-to-speech having to be installed first. Then, after one or two windows appearing and disappearing quickly, I would get the same error message that one of the prerequisite components failed to install and that setup would now exit. When I went to the Windows event log, I would find an error message like this: Product: TTS Wrapper -- Error 1303. The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files\Common Files\SpeechEngines\Microsoft\TTS20\1033. The installation cannot continue. Since that page outlined steps to change the security/permissions under Program/common files, I tried to follow those step to give full control to everyone, including administrators, before running setup_ST.exe again. I still got the same error message on screen -- that setup had to exit because one of the prerequisite components had failed to install. However, there was now a different error in the Windows event log -- Error 1304 instead or 1303: - System - Provider [ Name] MsiInstaller - EventID 11304 [ Qualifiers] 0 Level 2 Task 0 Keywords 0x80000000000000 - TimeCreated [ SystemTime] 2007-09-05T02:36:25.000Z EventRecordID 38 Channel Application Computer DoubleChicken - Security [ UserID] S-1-5-21-3902239006-87774349-106280843-1000 - EventData Product: TTS Wrapper -- Error 1304. | First, you don't need to turn off the firewall to install this, and you shouldn't need to turn off the anti-virus either. For the record, which firewall/anti-virus are you using? The problem is certainly privilege related. It appears to be caused by the Streets and Trips installer launching the Text2Speech installer without sufficient privileges. How exactly do you launch the Streets and Trips installer? Do you right-click it and select "Run as administrator?" If so then it is not launching the Text2Speech installer properly, which would be a bug. There are two options for working around the problem. The first is to temporarily disable User Account Control. The second is to manually install Text2Speech first before you launch the Streets and Trips installer. To use the first option, do the following: 1. Open the Control Panel 2. Open User Accounts 3. Click "Turn User Account Control on or off" 4. Accept the elevation prompt 5. Uncheck the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" check box and click OK 6. Log off and back on 7. Install Streets and Trips 8. Repeat steps 1-5 but check the box to turn on UAC again. The other option is to install the Text2Speech engine manually before launching the Streets and Trips installer. I apologize that I don't know where that installer is, but it should be on the DVD somewhere. Find it and then right-click it and select "Run as an administrator." Once it is installed the Streets and Trips installer *should* find it and not try to install it. --- Your question may already be answered in Windows Vista Security: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/047...otectyourwi-20 "Barbara" wrote: Quote:

installing programs from publishers I trust if I encounter installation problems. In this case, I turned off McAfee AV, McAfee firewall, and Windows firewall. Quote:

doesn't make sense to me because TTS is already part of Windows Vista. The point is moot because I can't find a separate setup program on the DVD to install TTS. Quote:

it would impact this problem, but it could. Quote:
indicate that something is broken with the installer. I haven't tried installing 2008 yet, but I guess I'll have to. Meanwhile, I'd suggest you call the installation support for the product and have them walk you through the installation. The phone number is (866) 834-8317. There are more support options at https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...8&gprid=502712. The problem you are having makes me think there is something specific to the installation of the OS you have because I find it difficult to believe they would release the product with an installer that just doesn't work. the operating system doesn't mean some other product group hasn't decided they could build something better. :-) All joking aside, S&T needs to support Text2Speech on several platforms. Since they have to build that functionality for XP it's not inconceivable that they decided to use the same functionality on Vista instead of having to treat the two platforms differently. I'll have to order up a copy of 2008 to see for myself now. --- Your question may already be answered in Windows Vista Security: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/047...otectyourwi-20 | Guest
