need help with mp3 files

Posted: 04-27-2004, 02:48 PM
hello.
The other day I went to upgrade from windows 2000sp4 to windows xp.
since I couldn't get a boot disk working and start in a dos window to
format the
c drive, I decided to run the full install from windows itself, delete
the current partician and then reselected that partician again for the
target drive
on which to install windows xp. well, it formated the drive which I
had expected, however, before installation of the operating system, a
message about
orphan files came up on the screen and around 19000 mp3 titles came
across the screen at a very rapid rate, and it looked like it had made
two passes over
the drive because at some point during the cycle, the numbers started
over from 0 again I believe. Now, when I go to play some of these mp3
files, most
of which are on another drive other than the drive on which the
operating system resides, they sound like random parts of different
mp3 files and none
of them have id3 tags. I've tried to find a pattern to see if maybe
there was anything meaningful in the jumble of files but I'm not
coming up with anything.
I wasn't sure what, if anything I can do to restore the original
integrity of my files? I asked a friend of mine about this and he had
never heard of an
orphan file message when installing an operating system. One other
thing that might be important is that for a while, on this partician,
when i had windows
2000 running, I couldn't delete some files, I would get an acces
denied error even though I am the administrator and have such rights
on the system. I
looked on my hard drive for an installation log that might have
anything associated with the orphan file mesage i was getting but
couldn't find anything
relevant either in all the *.log files or doing a word search for
orphan in every file on the drive. Thanks for any help you might be
able to provide regarding
this unusual inquiry?
Can you please also respond to me directly if possible as I'm not
always on the newsgroups. Thanks for any help that anyone might be
able to give.
Scott.
