Network access hangs the application

When the PC is connected to a LAN, everything works fine.

But working disconnected and then trying to use any
application that access a network, hangs that application.
For example, going to "My Network Places" is OK, but then
chosing "View network connection", hangs that application
(but not the rest of windows).

Any ideas would be much appreciated.
