Network connections, Internet connection wizard

I may have over looked this fix. If so please direct me.I
am Thunk. To drink too much one becomes drunk. To think
too much one becomes thunk. Read many post before
contacting.Didn't run across the right article or fix to
cure my minor set back. When attempting to set up a
connection(DSL/requires password) the pick I need is half
greyed out along with the one above it. The only
selection at that time is broadband with no password.
Tried changing previous screens to make sure the set up
code did not get linked to the wrong text set up. No
luck. I'm on a friends laptop with XP Professional on it.
There was no problem connecting to the DSL via the set up
wizard on his system. My system is also XP Professional.
I hope there is a hotfix for this. If you can imagine or
remember going from 28.8 (in this 2 traffic light town)
to a high speed connection. I can see the connection
coming in but have had no luck getting out. I tried using
the modem set up disc from the DSL provider without
success. I beleive the message was "NO PPoE Adapters
available". I heard this was a problem that had been
resolved. Around 3 weeks ago ,I updated my systems files
through the windows update. The agony of updating my
system at turtle speed drove me to see if high speed was
in the area. My partner here, thinks the fix for it was
well before 3 weeks ago ,if that helps.
Thank you in advance for any help.
