network no, internet yes

symptoms:

two vista home premium pcs
have internet connectivity on both
both show in both network maps
can't select pc1 from pc2 network map, and vice versa
discovery, sharing, public folder sharing, printer sharing set to on in both
pcs
pwd protected and media set to off both pcs
ip range added to zone alarm
can't ping either pc from the other
both pcs in same workgroup
network set to private
sharing set to "everyone" for shared drives.
about to slit wrists
