Network problems with 98, 98SE, XP and Vista

Posted: 03-14-2008, 09:29 PM
I have a small home network with 4 machines running Windows 98, Windows
98SE, Windows XP HE and Vista.

There is no problem between XP and the other three machines, nor is there
any problem with Vista accessing all machines (including the two 98
machines).

Both 98 machines see the Vista machine but when I try to access the Vista
machine from these machines the following happens:

On 98 the icon shows the Vista machine name, and when I click on this icon
(expecting to get the "public" folder) I am asked for a network password to
access the Vista machine - (of course) I have no such password.

On 98SE the icon shows the "public" folder, and when I click on this icon
the 98SE machine locks up completely. <ctrl>+<alt>+<delete> reveals that the
Vista machine "is not responding", and I have to terminate the process to
continue operations on the 98SE.

Is there any solution to these problems or must I simply give up all
attempts to access the public area on the Vista machine from my Pre-XP
machines?

regards Sven

You say you have no problem accessing Vista from an XP machine, but do you
experience a fairly significant slowdown when accessing the Vista machine
from an XP machine? That is what I am running into at present.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer Sharing Wizard to include
Vista in your “New” Network, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to
adding a Vista computer to it.

I've done a lot of tests trying to access Vista's shared folders from
Windows 98 (and 95 and Me) over a network. To the best of my
knowledge, it isn't possible. Microsoft no longer supports the Win9x
operating systems, and compatibility with them wasn't part of Vista's
design, implementation, or testing.

The WinNT operating systems (2000, XP, Vista) can access Vista's
shared folders over a network.
