Network problems in RC2

Posted: 10-15-2006, 09:55 AM
I replaced RC1 with RC2 (not an upgrade). Everything installed fine,
although I had to install from within the running instance of RC1 because
the USB devices connected to my computer caused the Setup DVD to BSOD
(stupid!!) and I was too lazy to unplug the devices.

Anyway, I thought all was well up until I opened up Internet Explorer and
although it found the site it would not connect. It would just sit there
saying "Connecting to ...". I tried disabling and reenabling the network
card. Didn't help. I tried rebooting. Didn't help. I tried right-clicking
its icon on the system tray, and rather than clear DNS and WINS caches and
re-run DHCP client (etc), it paused and then came back and said, "Yup, you
do indeed seem to have a connection problem. [OK]" Thanks, bozos.

Strangely, at one point I did manage to get the web page's title to show up.
I tried accessing Live.com (followed a Windows link) and the header HTML
just started to render, but then it stalled. I tried Creative.com because I
was trying to get the XP 64-bit sound card driver that worked with Vista
RC1, but only the title showed up in IE's titlebar. After a refresh even
that wouldn't show up again.

Back to XP, forever until the next build. Given what others have said about
networking issues in RC2 (where problems did not exist in RC1) I don't
anticipate workarounds being worthwhile, since one workaround will only
reveal another networking issue.

Jon

Hi Jon,

Have you tried overwriting with XP drivers? My perception was that most of
the networking issues had been resolved with RC2.
> Back to XP, forever until the next build
That'd be the version that you will find on store shelves in January,
complete with a price tag.

Not yet. XP drivers worked with Sound Blaster Audigy and NForce4 SATA RAID,
might work with networking, too, good call.

Perhaps an MSDN CTP then if by chance one will be pushed.

Hi Jon,

According to my sources, there will be no further interim builds for any
group, MSDN and tech beta included. Concentrations will be on fixing known,
common bugs for RTM.

So be it. Unless XP drivers do the job, no Vista for me.

Unfortunately, the XP drivers did not work with Vista RC2.

The network drivers for the nVidia NForce4 have been bundled with Vista
since RC1. Vista wouldn't even recognize the XP drivers as being compatible
with the network adapter.

Hi Jon,

Unfortunately, you are probably stuck if the motherboard manufacturer
doesn't release a Vista-compatible set. It is not unusual for a device to
work with one build of Vista and then not with the next due to some changes.
If you have the feedback icon, you might try submitting this as a bug.

No need; nVidia nForce4 is one of the most prevalent mobo chipsets on modern
white box mobos, Microsoft and nVidia are aware. They just don't care (won't
until gold).
