Thanks for the input. Yes I did attempt to open IE7 to a web page(s). I
attempted many things over the course of different installs. After a
complete install I could connect fairly well, but after the first restart
everything went south so to speak. My cpu usage went up to 100% and Internet
usage was only one of the problems.

have same problem. Network connection says local only, worked for a bit after
finally instaling a intel 10/100 that XP liked and autoloaded drivers for. It
did not seem to like any 3c905 nic cards that i have and i have about 15 of
those, also did not alto put in a realtek 8139. Tried release and renew can
see the linksys router and enter it's web interface. connection says tcpipv4
local
and domain_not_local. Would really appreciate some help with this.

Follow up----

I received my DVD order yesterday (I installed from my ISO/download before).
The good news is that everything installed fine (clean install) and I've
restarted, shutdown and my connection to the internet holds. Here's what I
did differently after my DVD install --- I needed compatible virus software
that Vista understood. In my previous installation I tried to install two
different virus SW packages I used on my XP machines. After both installs I
had to restart my PC; that's where the problems began with local connects
only, 100 % CPU usage etc. I have a wireless network set up using a WRT54G.

I happened to see a message in the Vista NG's about a Virus SW (free)
download. After my DVD install I installed this free virus SW and didn't
mess with my virus SW. Everything seems fine so far.

Just for the heck of it I installed the MS office 2007 beta. Now I can test
the SW (Vista and Office) and communicate properly when necessary.

Log in Safe Mode with networking as administrator.

WOuld not allow me to run discovery tool and some other things that poped up
asking for administrator privaliges did not work, but was able to change
settings to private which i had done in normal mode previously but it seemed
to take this time

Hello Tony,

I had the same problem my LAN network connection had a status: local.
Some where i read that vista determines this status by checking your gateway
ip adress. So i did an ipconfig /all. And i saw that i had 2 gateways. one
0.0.0.0 and an other 192.168.2.1. So i configured an static ip adress. And
the status local was solved. I back configured my LAN back to DHCP. And the
problem was solved.
