| I have 3 computers: desktop running xp, laptop running xp, and laptop running vista. I set up my wireless network using the laptop and desktop running xp. When I got my laptop running vista, I tried connecting to my network and here's what I got: Vista laptop will connect and transfer files wirelessly with the xp laptop and connect to the internet wirelessly. I can SEE my desktop on the map of wireless network connection on the vista computer, but cannot select it/transfer files with it. Permissions are set to allow transfers (unless there is something that I don't know about). On the network map, it lists my vista laptop connecting to my router with dotted lines (i assume this means wireless). My router then connects to the internet using a solid line (wired). The router has another connection (down from it) to what looks like the picture of a router, listed as "switch" and then has a solid line pointing to my desktop. When scrolling over the desktop it gives the IP address and MAC address but will not allow me to click on it to connect, The same happens with the so called "switch" except it just lists it as switch (unable to select it). I only have the one LINKSYS router so I'm not sure what the switch is for. My vista version is the premium, is this the problem? Someone please help!!! | Guest

| It could be the permission issue. What do you receive if you do net use \\dektopipaddress in the Vista? Right now, I'm guessing name resolution. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...on-on-lan.html You're most likely using broadcast name resolution, so you have an SMB problem. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/0...ing-using.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. | that is a switch and not a router. you need a router to supply DHCP addresses to the computers on your network. what is the switch connected to? a broadband modem? which modem? On Sun, 19 Aug 2007 18:38:06 -0700, dean <dean@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: Quote:

| I have an sp network and have just added a vista pc. I can see the xp machines from the vista pc and can see the vista pc from the xp machines. I can also print from the vista machine. But I can't access any the xp machines from the vista pc and I can't access the vista pc from the xp machines. I keep getting the error that the path was not found or that I don't have the correct permission. I'm setup as a user on both machines. Any suggestions as to what I may be missing? Thanks | Guest
