networking XP Pro & 2000 Pro

Posted: 10-22-2003, 06:03 PM
Can anyone help me get my network straight. 1 computer
with XP Professional, the other with 2000 professional. D-
Link Ethernet Broadband Router and a Westell WireSpeed
router for the shared DSL connection. The DSL works for
both and each computer can see itself in the Workgroup
called WORKGROUP. I have user names setup on both that
are the same and have tried all combinations of loggin. I
logged in as Administrator on both and the XP
computer "saw" itself and the 2000 computer but I got and
access denied/permission error when I tried to view the
contents of the 2000 computer. I can not get the 2000
computer to see the XP computer at all. Also, if it makes
a difference the D-Link router is a print server for the
XP computer and is working fine.
Please help. Thank you.

Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

Make sure that the "Everyone" group has permission to access the
shares on the 2000 computer.

Disable XP's Internet Connection Firewall on the LAN connection. By
design, it blocks file sharing.

I am having the same problem with access denied errors.

For some reason, even though I renamed the Owner account on the XP box, the
Windows 2000 network still sees the account as "Owner." Since Owner is not
registered on the server, Windows 2000 logs it in as a guest, which has no
privledges. That is why I get the access denied errors.

Can anyone tell me how I can change the user name that windows XP is
broadcasting?

Thanks!
