every version of IntelliPoint or IntelliType I've seen for the last few
years have all looked identical, same dialogs, same exact features, etc...

from some reason i get this error:

i have quite enough space for this driver (more than 1GB ) , so what gives?
has anyone else got this error?

I would say that you don't have enough space. Get a bigger hard drive or
free up some space. If you have a lot of files stored on that drive
consider external storage.
Every installer needs space for temporary files as well as the application
itself. The OS itself needs breathing room.
