Posted: 08-23-2007, 02:10 PM

Hi guys,

Thought Id tap into your masses of knowledge. I'm about to order a new
rig costing bout £1500 and I just want to know whether or not I should
be getting Vista 64 or stick with XP.

I'll mainly be using it for Gaming and so I want to get the most out of
it.

Specs include Q6600 Quad, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and 8800GTX Nvidia.

Look forward to your replies.

At this point in time stay with XP if gaming is your main activity.

You'll always be able to install Vista in a year or so when more made
for Vista games are out.

If you want to use more then 3GB of RAM then you will have to go to 6
bit vista. You would also need vista to do any kind of directX10 gaming
however, if u want the most out of your performance then stick with x
pro 32 bit. the other gig of ram will find a use, but not anything yo
will be able to notice ( your bios or something) . take it from me - 6
bit vista is very buggy. vista alone even 32 bit is buggy. gaming ha
been difficult at first for me but i have spent enough time web surfing
talking with tech agents, and download patches to get things to wor
properly. its up to u man, and i went through the same dilemma before
got this laptop last week. so write down pros and cons and look at it
and you will figure out whats best for you

This is NOT accurate. Vista is solid IF you make sure your hardware has
proper driver support. The machine you listed will LOVE Vista64 and be
rock solid.

I would personally however dump the 8800GTX and get a 2900XT. Nvidia
drivers with Vista are a bit problematic while ATI has been pretty solid
in Vista from the start.

Truth be told, when I went to Vista I threw caution to the wind and
decided on x64 Ultimate.

-*Everyone*-, including the supplier warned be against 64 bit, but I
did it anyway. I installed it into a dual-boot configuration, but found
that it wasn't necessary. A couple of weeks later, I realized that I
haven't booted into XP for a while, so I made a full backup of all my
important data and then simply wiped out everything and reloaded Vista

Now I'm running on a 100% pure Windows Vista x64 Ultimate PC, and I
haven't looked back.

64 Bit is the definitive future of computing for the next couple of
years. I'm going to tell you what I tell everyone else: -If your PC is
64-Bit capable, then there is no reason at all to not use Vista x64. If
you insist on using cutting edge hardware, why skimp on the operating
system?-

I remember the same argument all those years ago when we moved from
16-Bit Windows 3.1 to 32-Bit Windows 95. And my prediction is that we'll
all have the same reservations when one day moving from 64-Bit to
128-Bit and beyond!

I haven't made the 64-bit plunge, but if you're already blowing mad wads of
cash on your system, why throw in an OS that's not gonna have the potential
to take full advantage of it?

The driver situation for 64-bit has NEVER been that bad, and you can turn
off digital signing so there's really no excuse it seems now a days.

Good luck.

I ran 32 bit Vista on my AMD 5600+ system, I worked ok, I ordered the 64 bit
Home Premium Disk.
After a while I went back to XP pro, Had issues with lockups found it was
the ram rather than Vista.
Anyway I upgraded to the Core2 6750 dual core, Ran XP pro first found it to
be choppy in World of Warcraft and most other games got average frames of 45
FPS
Now with Vista 64 I get an average of 61 FPS in WOW.

Core 2 6750 Dual core 2.66 GiG, 1333 FSB
3 Gigs Crucial Balistix PC6400 Ram
Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard
ATI 1900 XTX 512 mb with Zalman VF900 cooler
Sound Blaster FX-i sound card
2 Seagate 160 Gig SATA II HD's in raid 0
2 Samsung SATA DVD RW drives

Seems that 64 bit Vista is more stable than the 32 Bit was and I have found
drivers for
all my hardware. Its 64 Bit for me from now on.

PS, How do you shut off the driver signing ?

I was feeling pretty adventurous when I built my Q6600 system, so I went
ahead and got the 64 bit Vista Premium. I gotta say, for it's quirks
and over-compensation for dummy users... it's great.

Core2Quad Q6600
4GB of RAM
Radeon HD 2400PRO
nVidia 650i chipset mobo

These are the games I've played on it with no issue:

World of Warcraft
City of Heroes
ST: Armada 2
ST: Bridge Commander

I'm waiting for my nVidia 7900GT to come back from RMA. I have the
2400Pro in there for HD video output to the TV.

My main system is an E6600 with a Geforce 8800GTS running XP Pro. I
haven't migrated to the Q because I hate hate hate migrating to new
puters *sigh* Reinstalling apps and getting everything all nice and in
order is quite a pain.

How has the 2400Pro done for you? Also why not go with the 2600XT sinc
you can find them around $100
