New Vista Install Latched Up Tight-Can't Proceed

All new equipment. Initial/clean install OEM Vista Business on a new hard
drive. It said I have a 30 day trial period.

Install completed. I changed a few display preferences. I was unable to
find where I could initiate the driver install process. I clicked on control
panel, but nothing displayed. Huh? I thought I screwed up a display setting
so I did a restore, thinking it would simply reset the default settings.
Lots of hard drive activity.

At this point Vista decides my hardware had "changed" and promptly asks for
the key. Then it demands I register immediately. Though annoying I would
comply if it let me install the drivers to my NIC card. I obviously can't
install a modem card since it has drivers as well. When I fail to register
it logs me off. I try to log on and I'm hit the "register immediately"
business.

With great restraint I manage not to add any personal commentary. I've been
installing Windows since 3.0.

Any help is appreciated.

For clarity sake, it's asking you to activate, not register...right?

Okay, you can activate over the phone, it should be offering you the option
to activate over the phone. If not, boot the system into safe mode, click
the Activate Windows shortcut on the start menu if the nag noesn't
immediately appear and you should see an option to activate by phone.
