Do a system restore to a restore point before the update.
That usually works for me. The System Restore feature has
saved me a lot of computer headaches.

Hello Francie,

Microsoft has stopped supporting java in Windows XP. However, you can try
downloading Sun's Java (it's just like the old java which was in windows
before).
