Scandisk malfunction

Run scandisk in the Safe Mode. Reboot and when Windows
first start press F8 (be quick). If you do it fast enough
you will get a menu, select Safe Mode.

That is what it is supposed to do. To run "check disk" you must restart your
computer.

Scandisk malfunction

When I try to run scandisk from the "tools"menu, I get the
following message: 'the disk check could not be performed
because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to
some Windows files on the disk. These files can only be
accessed by restarting Windows.'
What causes this message? Is there a conflict between
programs. I have disabled Norton Anti-Virus.
