no access to my XP computer?

Posted: 04-27-2008, 02:06 AM
I do not know what I am doing wrong.

I did all the set up and every thing on my Vista and My XP, file shearing is
on, notwork domain name is the same, hub is working and connected.
I have access to the internet through my hub with both computers and if I
look at the network map on my Vista computer I even see my XP computer
connected to the network.
I just dont have access to it and I am loged in with adminitrator access.
What am i doing wrong?

For your Home or Small business, you set up the same Workgroup Name, NOT the
same Domain Name!!!!

Read info below!

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and
passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you
have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to
access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer.

Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in
Start >All Programs >Accessories >Communications), and tell the Wizard to
enable File and Printer Sharing.
Or > Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a Home or Small
Office Network.

If you can not acces your Vista computer from your XP computer try this.

I have 3 computers, two running Windows XP and one running windows Vista.

In the computers running windows Vista I was able to see and access the
other two computers, the computers running XP can see the computer running
Vista but they can not access the share folders. I received a permission
error message.

The problem was Windows Vista has different level of security for the
different users of the network and the files I wanted to share have only
permissions for the users in the computer with windows Vista.

If you go to my computer, then users, and then select for example public,
you can check the properties and then select the tab security. You will see
all the users with rights of access that folder, for example everybody,
administrator, owner, etc. And everyone has rights like read, list, modify,
etc

If you go to the folder that you want to share (It is suppose the folder is
already shared) and you check the properties then security you MUST see the
users in the computers running XP, in my case is EVERYBODY.

I choose everybody because I am using a private home network with security
and I am the only person that uses that network but if you are using a public
or corporate network, it is suppose that you assign users or groups and you
give different levels of security, different rights, different passwords, etc.

The bottom line, choose a folder for share, share that folder, then go to
properties, security, right down EVERYBODY choose the rights you want the
users have like read or modify. Finally see if you have access to that folder
from windows XP. If that work you can do the same with any folder you want.

Remember if more than one person will access the data, instead of everybody
you must configure the name of the users and assign the permissions and
rights.

This work for me I hope it work for you too.

Bye
