No "Insert" key. Need keyboard short-cut

Posted: 01-09-2009, 04:47 PM
My keyboard doesn't have an "Insert" key. (As I understand that is becoming
more common.)

My question; Is there a keyboard shortcut that's an alternative to the
Insert key?

(I do NOT mean "Ctrl+V" to insert (paste) from the clipboad.)

Thanks

Turn off Numlock and press 0 on the keypad.

I don't think this is a common thing at all. I have yet to see a QWERTY
keyboard without INSERT (even if it's a shared key). I'd simply get a new
keyboard!

More common? I can't speak for all keyboards, of course, but
personally I've never seen one without an Insert key.

That said, I wouldn't mind not having an Insert key, since it's a key
that I never use on purpose, but am liable to hit accidentally.

So even though I have an Insert key here, I have it turned off so it
does nothing when pressed.

I join the chorus of the other respondents: I've never seen a keyboard
without an Insert key. However, assuming that you're sober and in full
control of your mental faculties [just joking!], you could use remapkey.exe
to drag the Insert key on the on-screen keyboard to an unused key, e.g. a
Shift key. You can download it from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en.

For reference to all the responders who are unfamiliar with what the OP is
saying, some newer keyboards do not have a DEDICATED Insert key, instead
placing it "below" a key and requiring you to use some special function key
to activate it.

This sucks. It's all because of idiot n00Bs who start typing in Word, hit
the Insert key, and then wonder why everything is getting overtyped. First,
Word hid the Insert functionality by default. Now, keyboards are placing the
key in hard-to-reach areas. This totally screws those of us who use the CUA
shortcuts for copy and paste.

Okay, I have to ask: what do either yours or Kelly's replies have to do with
my post? I'm not asking to remap keys nor am I asking what the Insert key
does. I'm complaining about the fact that it seems to be going away.
Remapping doesn't help because on the keyboards that are getting rid of the
Insert key, the layout of the 3 x 2 block of keys is also removed, so it's
not like I could remap "the key above Delete" to Insert, since often the
Delete key becomes this ridiculously huge key, like NumPad Enter. So my
muscle memory for the Shift+Ins keystroke, for example, can't be satisfied
by a remapping.

Not trying to be beligerent or anything here; I just don't understand what
you folks are trying to convey to me....
