no recording volume

Ive no sound card in computer - using external M Audio
Firewire 410. Want to record using Cakewalk but can only
get very poor recording level, whether with microphone or
guitar. On control panel playback volume is set at
minimum and cant be changed. Recording volume cant be
accessed. How do I change these levels?!?
