No sound in headphones

over a year, and up to a couple months ago they worked perfectly. My brother
and I both have had the same problem for the same amount of time: all sounds
work fine from the regular speakers, but not when we plug in headphones.
When playing music, you can hear what might be the bass, and none of the rest
of the music. In videos, you can vaguely hear the sound behind lots of
irritating noise. I don't know what the problem is and I was hoping someone
could give me some advice about what to do so I can use my headphones again.
