Not enough memory...

Posted: 09-16-2006, 06:27 PM
I wanted to install Vista RC1 on a virtual machine using Virtual PC 2004.

I receive an error - the installation cannot continue because I don't have
at least 512MB - in the virtual machine.

The maximum amount of memory I can assign to the virtual machine is 400MB,
while the host's computer phyiscal memory is limited to 512MB.

Is there any workaround for this situation - to trick the installer?

I can't install more physical memory on the workstation, even the prices are
very low.

Are you using Virtual PC with it's associated service pack 2? Originally
there was a problem with VPC but it had more to do with disk space than RAM.
I haven't personally used VPC for Vista (i tried once but got a disk space
error) but i believe SP2 rectified that. I 'did' however get Vista working
without any problem on VMware Server (which is a free download from VMware -
you need to register, but that's no inconvenience), so it may be worth
trying VMware server instead (just google from VMware server). Against
recommendations i actually got it working on my machine that, at the time,
had 512MB RAM using 256MB for Vista and 256MB for XP. To my surprise (this
is a few builds ago) Vista worked faster with the 215MB allocated via VMware
Server than it did on a seperate partition (dual boot).

I think that it's the latest - with SP2. I didn't encounter that problem with
hard drive partitioning.
How much memory resources does VMWare Server allow you to use for the
virtual machine?
How much do you need to allocate to your main machine?

I tested a previous vista build in Virtual PC and I had no
problems/restrictions regarding RAM.

Thank you!
