NTFS works fine on CF.
Have you marked your flash as non removable?

I believe so, other wise how would the CF work in FAT 32? How did you configure your CF to get it to NTFS? I plugged mine into a CF to IDE adapter and formated it on my development station. I then copied the files from my image directory to the CF. This worked fine for my HDD.

Well you can use FAT on removable CF by default. Also you could make some
partitioning from dos to make few partitions. Just wondering what you did.

Here is how I configured both the CF and HDD for Fat 32: Use DOS Fdisk, then format, then fidisk/mbr then bootprep. Works for both.
For NTFS I connected the CF via an IDE to CF adapter to IDE port and used Disk Manager to format NTFS. This worked for the HDD.
I am buying the new Athens parts from Sandisk that I have been told are set for non removeable. I will check with them again.

Hi Paul.

I think that the CF you have is a Fixed type and not a removable. It
is my experience that if you without any further can format the CF to
NTFS from the disk manager then it is a Fixed CF. By the way, if you
with the disk manager is capable to make two partitions on the CF then
there is no doubt the disk is Fixed.

I can only thing of two things that might go wrong.

1)Are you sure that you from the disk manager set the partition as a
primary and set the partition as active after format. I often forget
this point myself.

2)When you format the CF within the disk manager are you sure that the
disk size and cluster/Allocation unit size match your settings from
the Target designer. Special the Allocation unit size is in the disk
manager set as "Default" this gives 512 kB for disk sized from 0- 512
MB (You can find these figures on MSDN under NTFS).

Regards

Henrik

Hi Henrik,

Paul said: "Use DOS Fdisk, then format,...."

So this does not tell us if he has fixed or removable disk.
Although he never mentioned that he set partition active.

He said "fidisk/mbr" but this is not it.

Slobodan

Found where I was erroring. Thanks to both of you. I was not making the primary partition active while in disk manager. Once I read that I knew what I was doing wrong. In DOS when using fdisk, over the many years I automatically make the partition active without thinking. I have not disciplined myself well enough with disk manager
Thank you both for your kind and patient help

Hi Slobodan

If I understand Paul problem correct, then the procedure with "Use DOS
Fdisk, then format" and "fdisk/mbr" was when he use compact flash
formatted in FAT 32, where the image was running OK.

The problem started when he want NTFS running on the CF. He Described
that he used the Disk Manager to format to NTFS. Maybe I am making to
fast conclusions but I thought that Disk Manager was the Disk Manager
on a XP pro machine. If that is not the case I am sorry for
interfering. If it is the Disk Manager on a XP pro machine the I still
pretty sure that the CF is a fixed, because you can just format a
Removable disk to NTFS.

Henrik

Hi Roland,

You were right, my interpretation of response was wrong.
