Re: OE6 messages in Mail--2 diff. storage formats

The reason you cannot point them to a common folder as you can with outlook
so that you can use them both at once is that OE uses .dbx as a storage
format and Win Mail uses .eml. They use two different storage formats.
There may have been a hack developed by some of the OE MVPs--you'll have to
look around on the web, but as far as I know your choice is to back up your
OE mail and folders and copy it onto Vista.

If you google "backup OE" you'll find plenty. There is a public group for
Vista mail, so you might want to ask on it.

OE6 messages in Mail
Posted: 07-05-2006, 03:15 AM
I have Windows Vista Beta 2 build 5384 64 bit version installed. I have
managed to transfer my Outlook Express 6 address book in Windows Mail,
however when I try to import messages from O/E6 the dialogue box indicates
that the operation was conducted successfully but nothing happens. I copied
the .dbx files to a easily accessible folder at C:\AMI\e-mail, select import
mail from OE6 store directory and via browse path to the e-mail folder, this
shows the folders available, select all and next. As stated the dialogue box
indicates that the operation was successful but no messages.

Any help is appreciated.

Chad,

thanks for the response. It appears from the drop down menus that Windows
Mail can import OE6 messages, but in mine case or as general problem it
doesn't happen. I will take your advice and look for Google OE6 backup.

I could not import OE messages or account settings in either 32 or 64 bit
versions but I was able to import my contacts by by placing the exported
..CSV file from OE into the C:\Users\jojo\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Mail\Backup\new Folder and then use Windows Mail import function.

Any attempt to import from a Outlook 2000 PST file gives a MAPI not
installed error and I never got a chance to choose a file.

Thanks Chad,

for the interesting but not relevant links. Your proposal that I visit the
newsgroup for Vista Mail did indicate that it is not a "how to" problem on
my part, it is that Windows Vista Beta 2 build 5384 64 bit version has a
problem and does not work correctly to import OE6 messages, many users have
the same problem. Apparently the 32 bit version does work OK.

Outlook has to be installed to import from Outlook.

Frank--

I'm missing something. How did Outlook get into this?
