I only stated what the default program was for browsing the
file system (the default "shell") - as I understood your question
to be about the locating of the files, not the opening of them.

"...can anyone tell me which program is supposed to open folders
to browse files"

Now, once you have located the desired file and you select and
choose it, the OS uses the file extension (or recognizes the actual
file type) to associate it with a certain action such as loading it for
execution or invoking some application to open it for you.

When the OS does not recognize the filetype by its structure or
its extension/association, it allows you to choose what program
you want to create an association with. Unfortunately, there is a
checkbox that may be already checked that suggests something
like 'always use this program to open this filetype' or some such
thing. My guess is that this is what happened to you.

I didn't suggest a method, just the location of the default shell.
> if you can think of anything else i would be gratefull
Another poster posted a link to an explanation about managing file
associations, I hope it helps you to set things back the way they
should be. If I'm not mistaken, the setting are actually stored in the
registry - so maybe restoring the registry is a possibility for a fix.

The second part of your question isn't/wasn't clear to me because of the
fact that I haven't used Windows Media Center yet.

I'll check into it out of curiosity, but others here may get you help sooner
than I will be able to - sorry.
