Opening Unix documents under Windows

Posted: 10-29-2008, 08:13 PM
Hello. I'd like to download some website files prepared for a Unix platform.
My OS is Vista (SP1). Will the download itself cause any problems? How can I
view them on a Vista (or W2K) machine?

Thanks.

The download will not cause a problem. The question is whether you have a
program installed that is able to read the files. If they are standard
cross-platform files such as .html (you mentioned "website"), then they
will open in your browser (IE, Firefox). If they are text files, then you
may need to make some adjustments.

One of the differences between Unix and Windows in file naming is that Unix
files do not need an extension and Windows files do. For instance, if I
save a text file using TextEdit here in OS X and call it "mytextfile", OS X
and other Unix/Linux operating systems will open it correctly in a text
editor. Windows won't know what to do. In that case, all I need to do is
rename the file either in OS X or Windows to "mytextfile.txt" and Windows
will know to open it in Notepad.

Unix/Linux operating systems also use a different line ending convention, so
if the files are scripts that are supposed to run they won't work properly
in Windows unless you convert the line endings. If you're not downloading
sample scripts to try out, this won't be a problem for you.

So the answer to your second question is that it depends on the files you
are going to download. What filetypes are they? What programs were they
created in?

But no, you won't hurt anything by downloading them. If you need more help,
post back with more information about the files and what you want to do
with them.
