Operation could not be completed

Posted: 12-01-2003, 06:47 AM
My computer just suddenly failed to print. I went into
the control panel and looked in printers and faxes.
Where there had once been two printers, there was now
none. I tried to add a printer and got the "Operation
could not be completed" message. Since then I have run 4
virus programs on my computer, attempted to get rid of a
blaster worm, (one that I guess I never had) I have
been in the "services msc" and tried to "start" the print
spooler as well as the RPC (I have no idea what I am
doing but those two things seem to be related) I have so
many important documents on my computer I can't face the
probability of having to reinstall windows, but I'm
losing hope. I've tried everything. Any suggestions?

> If you have the capability to burn these files to cd-r's
I would recommend doing so. I'm working on a print problem
for one of my users right now. The most important thing
you can do is to make sure that you have a backup copy of
your files saved in another location (be it an external
hard drive, cd-r's, floppy disks, another computer, etc.).
This will protect you from losing all of those valuable
files. Better safe than sorry.

Now for the printer(s). What brand and model number of
printer and computer do you have? Is the printer usb or
parallel port? Did you upgrade to xp, or was it
pre-installed? All of this info would be helpful for any
tech who's trying to help you solve this problem.

Try the link I added below to one of microsoft's articles.
When you went into the setting for the print spooler, did
you set the spooler service to start automatically? After
doing this, have you restarted the computer? I hope this
helps. I'll check back tomorrow to see if you've had any
improvement.
Respectfully,
Kevin

Kevin, Thank you so much for responding. I have a Dell
Dimension 8200. My printer is HP Deskjet 895Cse. I can't
back up ANYTHING with out the RPC server or whatever it
is. Here is what I've tried. I've tried to manually
start spoolsv.exe, I've tried to start the RPC server...
(not the RPC locator) and it won't let me because of the
spools file. I've tried deleting all of my printer
files. I reboot EVERY TIME I do anything (just to be
caution) I also can't get my system restore to work. If
I try to reinstall my printer I get the message "The RPC
server is unavailable" If I try to start the RPC, it
tells me the print spooler service is not running. If I
try to start the sprint spooler... it won't let me
because the RPC is unavailable. I had one glimmer of
hope at 3:30 a.m. I changed the location of my parallel
printer to LPT3 and it finally acknowledged new
hardware... but it wouldn't let me complete the
installation becauseeeeeeeeeee... the RPC is not
running. If I try to add a printer...as I've mentioned
before... I get the dreaded "Operation could not be
completed" If I could just save some of my documents I
would try to start the whole thing over again. My dell
warranty runs out on Dec 4 and I'm not sure if it is a
software vs hardware issue. It's so frustrating... I
guess you tech guys could qualify as therapists too huh?
Thanks ahead for any help you might have.

Operation could not be completed

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that it is a parallel port
and Windows came pre-installed. Everything has been
working perfectly for two years. Thanks again.

Also this KB. If there are Lexmark drivers installed, this shows how to
disable the conflicting software. This is a lot of registry work to remove
all drivers and afterinstall print monitor software but it will get the
spooler back to a clean state.

Operation Could Not Be Completed
Posted: 04-06-2005, 04:51 PM
Hello,
I'm not able to add a printer driver using the standard printer wizard or
otherwise. I get the generic message, "Printer driver was not installed.
Operation could not be completed." I'm logged on as administrator, the
spooler is running, I've installed SP2, and this problem exists for all the
printers I have tried.
Thanks,
David

Are you trying to "add" a printer driver or replace the old one?

Sorry I'm so late replying, it seems like this group is always down...
I'm adding a new one.

The group is never down, it's part of Usenet if you access through Outlook
Express.

What make and model printer are you trying to install? Do you have the
latest drivers from the manufacturer's website?
